R4 Today…Back up Game tomorrow!

With computers becoming ever more powerful, it is easy to forget that one of the main reasons for advances in the technology is because of the gaming market. As one of the many people who enjoy gaming on a regular basis, I am always keen to see how fast my machine can run and at what level graphics and sound can be processed at. The console market is of particular interest at the moment.

What do they do?

Have you ever been fed up with trying to load a cartridge into your DS and found that it’s corrupted or doesn’t play properly? If the answer is yes then like me you should definitely get yourself an R4 card. Simply put the R4 backs up files including games on your DS. You can use it in conjunction with a micro SD card to store a variety of media files including music, files and photos when you’re on the move. Functionality wise, the R4 couldn’t be more flexible.

Where do I get it from?

Most online retailers will be able to help you purchase an R4 for as little as £3.99. You could try all the top sites, but a quick google search will usually reveal the best sites to get your card from.

Is it worth it?

Yes. I have lost so many cherished games over the years through extended play or simple degradation. Sometimes manufacturing errors can cause a game to conk out on you during play. Perhaps the best reason to buy an R4 though is in the event you own a rare game (which most of us do). As the game is virtually impossible to find in its original format, an R4 will provide from relief in case your copy breaks or becomes corrupt.

Any extras?

You can often find the R4 come in an array of different bundles including SDI memory cards. Transferring files from another computer is easy and the card itself is very sturdy. I dropped several on the floor and trod on them to see if they would break, but was surprised and pleased to note that aside from some dirt, the card stubbornly refused to crack! That said, I would not recommend trying that at home!

What next?

The R4 should be available for the 3DS shortly enabling you to save backup copies of games like The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS or Pilotwings 3DS. As to what the future in 12 months time will look like for the R4, it is difficult to speculate. It’s entirely possible that the memory capacity of the cards will expand enabling more files and games to be backed up and shared. If you don’t already own one, go out and buy an R4 now!
