Smart phone not so smart for everyone

Despite many attempts to convince me otherwise, I still don’t own a smart phone. I know that they’re the must have gadget to own and that they will make my life easier, but I just can’t shake the feeling that they’re designed to control my life.

At the moment technology kind of does run our lives and with the advent of smart phones you can be plugged in anywhere and at any time…provided you’ve got full satellite coverage of course. What concerns me most however is the drain all our technology is having on simple things like my utility bills. Were I to get a smart phone the chances are that its battery life wouldn’t be half as long as my current mobile. Do I want to spend more money on my electricity bill?

I live in Coventry and I found out that the majority of my home power supply comes from Red Diesel Coventry. This is part of a group called Crown Oil who to my surprise is one of the principle suppliers of diesel and red diesel in the UK for homes and businesses. Much more surprising to me though is their commitment to decreasing their carbon footprint. It made me think, do I want to increase my own footprint by getting a smart phone? I researched further and found out that smart phones use up more power then my standard mobile. So if I were to get an iphone or an android, I’d end up spending more on my utilities and burning up more energy. With my laptop, TV, stereo, ipod and current mobile phone I’m fairly certain I’m connected enough for now.

Think before you upgrade and ask yourself, ‘Do I really need this?’
