Old Fashioned Way
Recently, at my friend’s house (he’s a computer geek who specialises in Viral marketing and wouldn’t want it to be any other way; and that suits me…He sorts all my computer problems out and for free, no less), he took me up in to his attic to show me something special. Sat there on a dusty old table was a true behemoth of a computer: a two feet by two feet block with a keyboard that was almost as wide as the desk itself. My friend sat me down and said “watch this!”
So I watched.
And it was just like the old days–
My friend, in his infinite geeky genius (and my gosh was he excited…), had sorted the old Amstrad out so that it connected to the internet in that endearing, good old-fashioned way. I’m talking ten minutes to connect to the internet, a shoddy picture that is made up of fifty or sixty horizontal lines of information and a dodgy “ee-orr” noise that sounds like an electrified donkey.Brilliant…
And that was before we played the eighties games!
We spent the whole afternoon up there playing Double Dragon, Prince of Persia and Pac-Man, plus countless other classics from my childhood that I hadn’t thought about since I had discovered girls were actually quite a good thing. I was almost sad to leave the attic. Going up had been like going back in time, and sitting down at my new notebook computer it just didn’t feel right being able to connect to the internet in a matter of seconds–
